Understand the customer, and don’t stop until you understand why. Research is at the core of what we do. Inquire and listen carefully so we understand the users’ intent at the deepest level, enabling us to deliver the best solution. Articulate the intent.

Reimagine

Dare to reimagine what things should look like and how they should work. Find the most intuitive representation for a concept. Break free of past assumptions built on legacy media like paper documents. Recall that using Roman numerals, long division was painfully difficult; with decimals, the task is simple. We believe the interface deeply matters to the task at hand, which is why Materio’s goal is to deliver the most natural one possible.

Invest in speed

Make everything you touch go faster. We believe speed is the ultimate feature because it recovers the most expensive and only nonrenewable resource: time.

Speed makes all things affordable; a house, quickly built, is much less expensive. Our customers prefer Materio because it lets them go faster. Customers love quick response times from our support team. Internally when it comes to product development, more speed means less planning and debating and more doing. Speed is key to achieving a “flow state” in your work. Speed enables superior products as it gives us tighter feedback loops at all stages.

High iteration rate means we can make changes quickly, plan less and ship more, and just make changes if we find ourselves wrong. We can be more empirical and try more ideas instead of planning and debating. It means we can single-thread instead of multi-task, getting more things done faster.

Slow iteration rate results in a death spiral: because things are slow to change, experimenting becomes more costly, so you fear failure more, and have a weaker bias for action, which means you spend more time planning (and in meetings) instead of getting things done. Eventually, progress stops completely.
